I was thrilled to learn that the Berkeley Library at the University of California recommends Green Town USA among the case studies and sources on its Sustainable Design Resources page, which is very comprehensive.
Another mention of Urban Farming
In “The Latest Dirt…in Gardening Books,” Jill Mickel at the Lawrence Public Library recently said some great things about Urban Farming:
I especially like that this book by Thomas J. Fox provides a philosophical and historical background for urban farming, including an in-depth discussion of the meaning of sustainability.
It is a great resource for anyone that wants to grow food or flowers in limited space. This can be accomplished in small plots, in containers, on roofs...pretty much no matter your space or location, there is something that you can grow. Whether you are growing just a few varieties to jazz up your purchased produce—or you want to become a market farmer—you will be able to learn what you need with this book.
Thanks, Jill!
Second edition of Urban Farming out
The second edition of Urban Farming is now out! I’m grateful to Bud Sperry and CompanionHouse Books for making that happen.
I’m also grateful to landscape designer Diana C. Kirby, whose excellent article in the Austin American-Statesman about urban farming mentions my book.
For an excellent overview of the urban farming movement, “Urban Farming: Sustainable City Living in Your Backyard, in Your Community, and in the World” by Thomas Fox is a comprehensive guide to urban agriculture. From basic backyard farming tips and DIY projects to a big-picture overview of commercial urban agriculture, it covers every facet of urban farming.
The article also provides lots of additional resources tailored to urban farmers and gardeners around Austin.
Thanks, Diana.
